Xanthelasma

Xanthelasma are yellow growths on the eyelid caused by a build-up of cholesterol in the skin. They can be removed surgically under local anesthesia. There is a 20% chance of recurrence over 10 years.

What you should know about Xanthelasma

Xanthelasma has no consequence on vision or the health of the eye. Commonly, it is a localized skin problem where the fat accumulates in the skin. Only in few cases it is due to high blood cholesterol. It affects progressively the upper and the lower eyelid in both eyes.

The cosmetic blemishes can be corrected surgically. In most patients it can be fully removed without leaving a scar. If there is recurrence years later, it will have to be removed again.

Surgery

Surgery is performed in the office under local anesthesia. It takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Recovery

Sutures are removed 10 days after surgery. Bruising and swelling can be expected for a couple of weeks. Cold compresses are applied to reduce swelling and bruising. Antibiotic ointment or drops may be prescribed. Warm compresses may be recommended after several days to increase blood flow to the area and promote healing.

Why choose an oculo-facial plastic surgeon

Removal of xanthelasma is a very delicate procedure because, if not done properly, it can alter the position of the eyelid crease or produce an inesthetic fold. Oculo-facial plastic surgeons are specialist in the cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid surgery.
