Bladeless LASIK Surgery Explained

By admin January 9, 2015

shutterstock_75743122LASIK surgery is one of the most common and popular procedures performed today to correct a variety of eye problems. A surgeon can resolve nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism by changing the shape of the cornea. Creating a hinged flap of tissue in the outer layer of the cornea will allow either a blade or a laser to eliminate microscopic cells in the layer underneath.

For those of you interested in this procedure you might have assumed there was only one method; however there are two: bladeless and traditional. At CorrectVision Laser Institute, we want to ensure that you are aware of your options and have an understanding of each. Many are familiar with the traditional method, so we have provided some information regarding the bladeless option.

The Difference Between Bladeless and Traditional

Traditional LASIK surgery is performed with a thin blade, otherwise known as a microkeratome, to make an incision in the cornea to create a hinged flap. This protective flap of tissue will permit the cornea to heal quickly and naturally, with little to no discomfort.

Bladeless LASIK surgery utilizes a femtosecond laser to create that same-hinged flap of corneal tissue with equal results. The success rate of this method provides patients with an alternative way to correct their eye problems as opposed to the traditional method.

The Safety Involved in Bladeless LASIK

Both methods of LASIK surgery have been proven to be safe and effective; however the bladeless option holds some important advantages.

  • Lowers the risk of corneal flap complications
  • Allows for safer enhancement if a second procedure is needed
  • Faster visual recovery
  • Improved uncorrected visual acuity
