6 Winter Eye Care Tips for Better Eye Health

a girl demonstrating winter eye care tipsWinter brings cloudy days and cooler weather. Since this time of year causes us to spend more time indoors, it’s easy to think that your eyes are out of harms way. However, this season can have just as much of an effect on your eyes as the summer. We have provided you with six winter eye care tips to keep your eyes healthy during the holidays.

1. Use a Humidifier

Winter weather often causes dry eyes, since heating systems work to take the moisture out of the air. In order to preserve some moisture, try using a humidifier at home or in areas with indoor heating to avoid irritation or dryness in your eyes.

2. Rewet Your Contact Lenses

If you suffer from dry eyes in the winter and wear contact lenses, consider using rewetting drops or talking with your doctor about solutions that could help hold in moisture.

3. Wear Sunglasses

While the winter sun may not feel as bright or as warm as the summer sun, UV rays are just a strong. Wear sunglasses in the winter to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.

4. Layer Up

The winter wind and snow can stir up debris and dust that can make their way into your eyes. Wear a hat or a hood for extra protection against weather, wind and debris.

5. Apply Makeup with Caution

Holiday celebrations are often the time for some extra party makeup. Before you apply, check the expiration dates on your mascara, eyeliner and eye shadow. Also, make sure to clean your brushes to avoid using dirty brushes near your eyes or transmitting bacteria from expired makeup. Remove all makeup before you go to sleep.

6. Keep it Clean

Winter signals the onset of flu season and other illnesses caused by the change in weather. Make sure to avoid catching or spreading the flu or eye-related illnesses by frequently washing your hands and not touching your eyes.
