In the past three years, eye injuries due to fireworks have more than doubled, according to the most recent fireworks injury report issued last Friday. Before you reach for your sparklers and firecrackers, the staff at CorrectVision Laser Institute wants to remind you to use caution and to follow these tips to keep you and your eyes safe this weekend.

How to Stay Safe During a Professional Firework Display

If you plan on viewing a professional firework display, keep these safety tips in mind:

  1. Respect the barriers and make sure you are at least 500 feet away from the fireworks.

  2. Do not touch an unexploded firework for they can go off at any moment without notice.

How to Stay Safe During Your Own Firework Display

If you decide to put on your own firework display, we recommend that you follow these eye safety tips:

  1. Do not mix fireworks and alcohol.

  2. Make sure the fireworks are stored in a cool dry place away from children and pets.

  3. Never let young children play with fireworks of any type, even sparklers.

  4. People handling the fireworks should always wear protective eye gear.

  5. Keep a close supply of water as a precautionary measure.

  6. Only light one firework at a time and never attempt to relight “a dud.”

  7. Never throw or point fireworks towards people, vehicles, structures or flammable materials.

What to Do in Case of an Emergency

Unfortunately accidents do still happen. In case of an emergency, resulting from a firework, it’s important to know what to do. Follow these steps:

  1. Seek immediate medical attention

  2. Do not touch or rub your eyes. Rubbing it can further alter the structure of the eye and make it more difficult to repair.

  3. Do not apply any pressure to the eye.

  4. Do not try and flush the eye with water or rinse it with an eye solution.

  5. If something is stuck in the eye, do not remove it.

By keeping these few eye safety tips in mind, you are ensuring the safety or yourself and the ones surrounding you. Remember, July 4th is all about celebrating America’s independence, and with that we want you take have a great time while remaining safe!
