Commonly referred to as the “window to the soul”, your eyes can indicate more than just your emotions. They can also reveal underlying health problems that you may not even be aware of.

While dark circles and puffy eyes may seem like minor imperfections, they can actually be signs of more serious health issues. By understanding your eyes, you can better understand what your eyes reveal about your health.

Dark Circles

Typically, dark circles indicate a lack of sleep, however if they still form after sleeping for seven to eight hours every night, then they could mean something more. Three common health issues related to dark circles are thyroid problems, anaemia and intolerance to certain foods. If you find that you have anaemia, start taking iron supplements or increase your iron consumption. For intolerance to certain foods, try cutting out wheat, gluten and dairy from your diet. Lastly, if you suspect that you have thyroid issues, then it’s best to consult with your doctor to plan your next course of action.

Yellow Eyes

Yellow eyes are an indication of a serious medical issue that should be addressed immediately by a medical professional. Most often the yellowing of the eyes is associated with liver dysfunction, bile duct obstruction, jaundice or hepatitis. If you are diagnosed with any of these conditions, it’s important that you reduce the amount of alcohol, sugar, white flour and processed foods that you consume. This will help minimize the amount of toxins your liver has to process, allowing it function smoothly and normally.

Bloodshot Eyes

Bloodshot eyes typically result from strain, allergies or other various eye conditions. If you’re tired or experiencing symptoms associated with allergies, such as sneezing or itching, try to rest and relieve your symptoms with over-the-counter medication. If your eyes remain bloodshot, see a doctor right away, as it could be a serious medical condition, such as conjunctivitis (pink eye), blepharitis or glaucoma. To ensure optimal eye health, make sure to include Vitamin C in your daily diet and rest your eyes frequently, if your job involves working on a computer.

Dry Eyes

A dry or gritty feeling in the eyes could be a sign of age or a symptom of dry eyes. Dry eyes is often caused by a deficiency in Vitamin A, and can easily be prevented by incorporating more Vitamin A rich foods in your diet. Some of these foods include: meat, egg yolks, butter, coconut oil, avocados, olive oil, nuts and cod liver oil supplements.

Puffy Eyes

Puffy eyes, like dark circles, are clear indicators of sleep deprivation. If a cucumber slice doesn’t relieve the puffiness, then it could be due to a sodium and potassium imbalance in your diet or dehydration. Make sure that you drink at least eight glasses of water a day and reduce the amount of processed foods you eat.
