Vision Conditions LASIK Corrects

By admin March 18, 2024

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a laser procedure that helps improve vision by reshaping the cornea.  With proper vision, light focuses on the back of the eye, on the retina.  With improper vision, light focuses on a different area of the eye, causing vision to be out of focus.  For most patients, LASIK provides a permanent solution to refractive errors and eliminates the need for contact lenses and eyeglasses.

LASIK surgery is helpful in improving the following conditions:

  • Farsightedness (hyperopia). This means you see objects well at a distance. It is a vision problem caused by an imperfection in the eye.  With hyperopia, the eye doesn’t have enough power to see close or nearby objects.
  • Nearsightedness (myopia) is a condition where light entering the eye does not directly focus where it should on the retina but instead it focuses in front of it.  This means that distant objects will be out of focus.
  • Astigmatism is an imperfection in the curvature of the eye.  While it is often easily treatable with contact lenses or glasses, not all cases of astigmatism are suitable for LASIK.
