How the Light Adjustable Lens Works

The Light Adjustable Lens is made of a special photosensitive material that can be adjusted in response to ultraviolet (UV) light. After your eye has healed from cataract surgery, your doctor can optimize your vision results using a series of 2-5 non-invasive light treatments over the course of 1-2 weeks. When you have reached your vision goals, a final light treatment is used to lock in the results.

Is the Light Adjustable Lens Right for Me?

Monofocal and premium lens implants such as multifocal lenses are still great options. But these lenses have limitations because after the lens power has been adjusted for your eyes and the IOLs implanted, they cannot be easily altered.

What Happens After Lens Placement

The Light Adjustable Lenses are placed into your eyes during cataract surgery. When you leave our office, you must wear special glasses during all waking hours to protect you from UV light. You will return to our office to receive a series of 2-5 light treatments approximately 3 days apart. These painless treatments only take about 90 seconds. When your optimal vision has been achieved, your lens power will be locked with a final light treatment. After 24 hours, you can stop wearing the protective glasses and enjoy your life with your great vision.

Frequently Asked Questions About Light Adjustable Lenses

Exposure to indoor and outdoor sources of UV light can cause uncontrolled changes to the Light Adjustable Lens until all light treatments are completed. It is imperative that you wear the special UV protective glasses provided during all waking hours (from time of lens implantation until 24 hours after the final lock in light treatment is completed). The clear pair of protective glasses must be worn indoors and the tinted pair must be worn in all bright sunlight conditions. The glasses may be removed when sleeping and may be temporarily removed when showering, washing the face or applying eye drops as long as you are not exposed to direct sunlight.

Light treatments are non-invasive and painless. When you come in for your treatments, you will sit in front of a Light Delivery Device (LDD). The light will be delivered directly to your lens for approximately 90 seconds. It’s that quick!

We won’t know exactly how many treatments you will need, but most patients have between 2 to 5 treatments to reach their desired vision results.
Yes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved this lens for cataract patients with astigmatism of 0.75 diopeters or more.
If you have cataracts, this means that proteins have started to build-up on your eye lenses. As these areas grow in size and opacity, you won’t be able to see as clearly. The only way to restore clarity to your vision is by removing the lenses and replacing them with an artificial one. The Light Adjustable Lens is just one of many options available for lens replacement.
The Light Adjustable Lens by RxSight® is the only adjustable lens available at this time. No other replacement lenses allow your doctor to adjust the power of your lens after it is implanted. It’s really a revolutionary cataract surgery option!
Light Adjustable Lenses are not covered by Medicare or insurance because they are not deemed medically necessary. However, if you want to have superior vision after cataract surgery, we offer 0% financing options to help make these lenses affordable. It all comes down to quality of life: we want to help you afford your best vision.
