Lifestyle Cataract Surgery

Natural lens replacement is the improvement of vision with lens implants, also known as intraocular lenses, or IOLs. Lens replacement can serve as an effective alternative to LASIK and can make it possible for patients to reduce and even eliminate dependence on eyeglasses and contact lenses. Often used as replacement lenses for patients who have cataract surgery, lens implants can help a large number of patients who would like to improve near, middle, and far distance vision, as well as those who would like to get rid of bifocals and trifocals.

Please contact Dr. Marc Bosem at CorrectVision for more information on Crystalens®, ReSTOR®, and other lens implants and IOLs. Our Weston and Fort Lauderdale, Florida-area eye care team can help.

The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens

The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens is implanted in the eye and replaces the cataractous natural crystalline lens. The lens is normally implanted in both eyes. The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens is designed to provide high-quality vision at all distances: distance vision for driving, golfing, sightseeing, intermediate vision for computer use, cooking, talking face-to-face , and near vision for reading or knitting. Most people receiving the TECNIS® Multifocal Lens technology don’t need to depend on glasses for daily activities. 90% of patients are able to function comfortably without glasses at ALL distances and nearly 9 out of 10 patients NEVER wear glasses Due to advanced aspheric technology, the TECNIS® Multifocal Lens provides excellent vision in low-light environments, such as reading a menu in a restaurant and driving at night. Immediately after surgery, some people may experience rings around lights when driving at night, but this typically lessens or goes away over time. The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens is indicated for the correction of cataracts in adult patients with or without presbyopia.

AcrySof ReSTOR IQ®

The AcrySof ReSTOR IOL is a multifocal intraocular lens that was approved by the FDA in March 2005 for cataract eye surgery performed in the United States. The second generation ReSTOR IOL IQ has an aspheric surface to enhance vision performance.

IOL Design

The AcrySof ReSTOR lens has an “apodized diffractive” design which consists of concentric rings of very fine ridges that create zones that bend light differently to provide correction over a wide range of viewing distances.

“Apodized” (which literally means, “to remove the foot”) means the sharp discontinuities in the concentric rings have been smoothed to create a more seamless optical system for seeing clearly at all distances. The difference between an apodized lens and one without apodization is similar to the difference between bifocal glasses that have a smooth transition between the near and distance lens zones and glasses without this smooth transition. Diffractive optical systems function much like aspheric surfaces: Both reduce aberrations that can interfere with clear vision.

The AcrySof ReSTOR IOL is made of a flexible acrylic material that allows the lens to be folded and introduced into the eye in small-incision phacoemulsification cataract surgery.

Effectiveness of the AcrySof ReSTOR IOL

According to Alcon, a clinical study of the AcrySof ReSTOR multifocal IOL found:

  • 80 percent of patients having the IOL implanted in both eyes could see well without bifocal reading glasses after surgery.
  • Nearly 94 percent of the patients having cataract surgery with the AcrySof ReSTOR IOL said, if given the choice, they would choose to have the lens implanted again.

Crystalens®

Imagine…

Being able to see your world as well as you did when you were younger, without the help of glasses or contact lenses. Being seen the way you want people to see you. Youthful. Energetic. Vibrant.

Being able to see the way you want to see. Near, far and all distances in between. Seamlessly. Effortlessly. Naturally. Never missing a child’s smile, the sparkle of a diamond, a cloud that looks like a face, an important plot twist in a mystery novel. Imagine a way to do it. Through your own eyes. Imagine all the possibilities. Imagine Crystalens®.

What is Crystalens®?

Crystalens®, a single-focus lens, is a cataract replacement lens that works naturally with your eyes’ muscles to give you the quality of vision you enjoyed when you were younger.

The revolutionary design element that makes Crystalens® the state-of-the-art replacement lens are “hinges” which are designed to allow the lens to move, or accommodate to focus on objects near, far and all distances in-between seamlessly.

Unlike old-style fixed focal lenses, which didn’t move, Crystalens® has the ability to move, thus focusing as your eye’s natural lens does. Dr. Bosem will take precise measurements to insure the correct power selection.

The Crystalens® Procedure

The medical procedure to implant the Crystalens® is the same safe, proven cataract surgery performed annually on over 7 million eyes globally. Over 65 million procedures have been done in the US in the last 25 years.

Typically performed in an outpatient surgical facility, the actual surgery takes less than twenty minutes. In a pain free procedure, Dr. Bosem will place a few drops in your eye, then use an ultrasonic probe to remove the cloudy lens from your eye. The Crystalens® is then gently placed where your original lens used to be. Once surgery is complete, Dr. Bosem will place additional drops in your eye to prevent infection and decrease inflammation.

With Crystalens® The Advantages are Clear

The Crystalens® offers significant advantages over other kinds of lens implants and corrective lenses.

Standard (single vision) lens implants don’t have the ability to provide a full range of vision. Most people who have single vision lens implants MUST wear glasses for middle and near vision.

The Crystalens® has the unique ability to focus on objects at varying distances using the eye’s natural muscle. This means the Crystalens® can provide sharper vision, without corrective lenses, throughout a full range of vision from near to far and everything in between.

The Crystalens® FDA one-year clinical study results indicate that 92% of the people enrolled in the study (implanted bilaterally) could see 20/25 or better at distance, 96% could see 20/20 at arm’s length and 73% could see 20/25 at near without glasses or contact lenses.

What is more exciting is that 98% of these people could pass their drivers test, 100% could see their computer or put on their makeup, and 98% could read a magazine, all without glasses or contact lenses. Also, your ability to see at approximately arm’s length (middle vision) will be greatly enhanced with the Crystalens®.

In addition, the quality of vision compared to wearing bifocals and/or trifocals is significantly improved. You’ll have a full range of vision, without having to tilt your head to find that portion of your glasses that allows you to see clearly. You simply look at something and the Crystalens®, mimicking the natural focusing ability of your eye, will automatically focus your eye at near, arm’s length, or distance.
